CHAPTER 7

It was Saturday night, and the Valentine’s Day sleepover was under way. The girls had already had a special dinner inspired by the pancake breakfast JoJo had eaten at the diner with her mom on the morning of her first workshop class. They used even more chocolate syrup and whipped cream and had added chocolate chips to the batter, which really put the pancakes over the top.

“These might not look as perfect as the ones at the diner, but they taste every bit as delish!” JoJo had declared. Sure enough, their hearts were just a teeny bit crooked, and their strawberry roses weren’t quite as flawless as the ones from the restaurant, but once they added powdered sugar to their plates, they’d never have known the difference!

Now they had all headed into JoJo’s basement, one of JoJo’s favorite spots in the house. The finished basement had a big-screen TV, comfy furniture, and plenty of arcade games, which made it a perfect hangout spot when JoJo or Jayden had their friends over. Knowing that they would be spending a good part of their evening down there, JoJo had decked out the place in Valentine’s Day decorations. Pink and red streamers dangled from the ceiling, and paper hearts with sayings like “Be Mine” and “I Heart You” covered the walls, but JoJo’s absolute favorite decoration was a giant cardboard cupid she’d found that looked just like the one Roberta had in the studio, only about ten times the size—it was bigger than life-size! JoJo had attached a string to the jumbo cupid and dangled him from the highest part of the ceiling. The overall effect was that he was flying over the room with his bow and arrow drawn. It was equal parts hilarious and adorable.

“Oh! That is the biggest baby I’ve ever seen!” Grace exclaimed as soon as she reached the bottom of the stairs.

“Ha, I was hoping that would be the first thing you noticed when you came down here!” JoJo laughed. “It’s cupid! Check out his bow and arrow!”

“He’s kind of hard to miss!” Kyra agreed. “It looks so cute down here! But is it okay that I’m a little scared of giant cupid? We’re not sleeping down here, are we?”

The other girls burst out laughing. “Aww, he comes in the spirit of love—I promise!” JoJo joked. “Take a selfie with him! You’ll feel much better!”

A few minutes later, after the girls had all taken selfies with the giant cupid, they settled on the couch to decide what to do next. “Anyone in the mood for a rom-com?” JoJo asked. “Or should we save that for later and listen to music now? Anyone feel like dancing?”

“Do you feel like dancing perhaps?” Miley asked, waggling her eyebrows.

“Always!” JoJo replied. “But why the face?”

“I’m hoping you’ll show us the solo from your workshop! If we move the coffee table, will there be enough room for you to perform it?” Miley asked, pointing to a section of the basement that had mirrored walls.
